AC Coupled Batteries vs. DC Coupled Batteries

  • 0:02
Hey, it's Alex from KDEC here.
  • 0:05
I'm just wanting to walk you through the differences between DC coupled and AC coupled batteries.
  • 0:08
When considering a battery for your home, it's important to consider which option will suit you best.
  • 0:13
The main difference between AC coupled and DC coupled is the way the battery's wired into the system.
  • 0:19
A DC coupled battery is controlled directly by the solar inverter on site and can be charged directly from the PV energy above.
  • 0:26
This means that the battery is generally more efficient and can be integrated into your existing monitoring in most cases.
  • 0:32
AC coupled batteries can be installed on any site with or without solar, regardless of the existing infrastructure in place.
  • 0:41
This is due to the fact that the battery has its own internal charger and battery management system.
  • 0:46
As the battery has to convert PV energy from DC into AC in order to operate, you'll find these batteries aren't as efficient as DC coupled batteries, and generally more costly to install.
  • 0:56
If you have an inverter such as a Fronius Gen24, which can directly integrate with batteries, the DC coupled option is a great product to consider as the system will be more efficient and generally be more cost effective to you.
  • 1:10
If the existing PV system is a little old or your inverter won't allow a DC coupled battery, an AC coupled battery such as a Tesla Powerwall is the best option for you.
  • 1:20
Above all, with battery storage, quality is important as there is a massive influx of cheap batteries in the market.

See the KDEC team to learn more about batteries because tomorrow matters.
